Scientific name: Potamochoerus porcus
Identification: Predominantly brown with a lighter color mane. Sows tend to be more yellow in color where boars are black/grey with horizontal white shades. The oldest boars appear white.

Life expectancy: 20 years
Habitat: Dense vegetation cover and water is a necessity. Prefers coastal, mountain and river thickets and tall grass close to water.
Habits: Lives in droves with an average of 5-12 animals. These family groups consists of a dominant boar, dominant sow, other sows and their piglets. Droves with young are very aggressive. Mostly nocturnal, but will on exception present itself in day time. They rip up soil for plant roots.

Hunting: Commonly known as the poor mans leopard as they provide an extremely challenging hunt based on the same principles as leopard hunting. Hunters sit in a hide at a bait site waiting for them to make their appearance or chase them down with hounds.
