Nyala

Scientific name:  Tragelaphus angasii

Identification:  Gracious slender antelope. White chevron between the eyes, white stripes on the body, white dots on the hind quarters with a thick white tipped mane. Lower legs are yellow, making it appear as if he is wearing socks.

Life expectancy: 13 years

Habitat:  Associated with dense bush cover. Prefers floodplains bordering grass patches.

Habits:  Forms temporary herds. Territorial bulls will defend their territories against other bulls but females come and go as they please. Bulls haunch their backs while rising their mane when another bull is in close proximity. Feeds during the cool periods of the day, occasionally even at night.
